Class 11- Stats Flashcards
what is a correlation?
the strength and direcrtion of linear relationships between variables
(r)
what is a positive correlation?
when one factor is positive, the other factor is also positive
what is a negative correlation?
when one factor is positive/increases, the other factor is negitive/decreases
what is a high correlation?
when the factors are related either negtively or positively
what is a low correlation?
when there are no relations between factors
ranges from -1 - +1
what is a t-test?
comparisons between 2 groups only
(t)
(#) = degrees of freedom/number of subjects (n)
what is ANOVA?
comparisons of 3 or more gruops of scores
what is a p-test?
way to determine is something is significant
< 0.05 (95% chance results are valid)
what does it mean when something is statistically significant?
smaller the value = more significant
what is the central tendency?
the typical score values in a group
what are the 3 central tendencies?
mode (mode)
median (Mdn/Median)
mean (M)
what is the mode?
the value that appears most often
what is the median?
the middle number in the list
what is the mean?
the average number from the list
what are the 3 varabilities?
1) standard deviation (SD)
2) low standard deviation
3) high standard deviation
what is standard deviation?
a unit of how far the data is from the mean
how spread out the data is from the mean
what is low standard deviation?
most data points are close to the mean
what is high standared deviation?
data points are spread out
what is a range and how do you calculate it?
the distance between largest and smallest scores
subtract highest value from the lowest vaue
communicated following mean ex: M=5 (range)
