Ch 10- Practice Schedules Flashcards
what are the 6 types of practice?
massed
distributed
constant
variable
blocked
random
what is massed practice?
fewer but longer practice sessions (1/wk x 90 min)
little or no rest between trials
more time practicing than resting
when should you choose massed practice?
immediate retention is required
for discrete skils
when its all about repetition
what is distributed practice?
same amount of practice (total) as massed (3x/wk x 30min) spaced across more sessions
longer rest intervals
rest time is equal or greater than practice time
when should you choose distributed practice?
delayed retention is required
for contiuous skills (can be tiring)
when its about applying
what is constant practice?
one variation practiced in a practice session
appropriate for beginners or younger athletes
what is variable practice?
many variables in a practice session
takes longer to learn skill
retention and transfer improves
performer learns to break down the skill better
better at error detection
what is blocked practice?
reherses the same skill repeatedly
predictable and repetitive (AAA, BBB, CCC)
best for young or inexperienced
what is random practice?
rehearses a number of different skills in quasi order
unpredictable, challenging (ABC, CBA, BCA)
best for more advanced learners
what are 2 things that happen when learner switches form skill to skill/different variables?
1) elaboration
2) reconstruction
what is elaboration?
notice distinct differences in variations and remembers = increased learning
what is reconstruction?
temporary forgetting between attempts, have to repeat problem solving = increased learning
