Circulatory system Flashcards
What is the circulatory system made up of?
Blood, heart and blood vessels
What is the function of the circulatory system?
To transport substances around the body
What does the circulatory system move?
Nutrients absorbed from the digestive system to all the body’s cells
What does blood absorb?
Oxygen in the lungs and carries it to the active cels
Where does blood carry carbon dioxide?
From the cells to the lungs, where it is released to the air
What else does the circulatory system do?
Regulates body tempature
What is blood?
A type of connective tissue that circulated throughout all parts of the body
What is blood made of?
- Plasma is a protein rich fluid that carries blood cells and makes about 55% of blood volumes
- Red blood cells make up about 45% of blood and contain hemoglobin which allows them to transport oxygen
- White blood cells the only blood cells with a nucleus they make up less than 1% of blood and recognize and destroy invading bacteria and viruses
- Platelets- less than 1% of blood these tiny cells help in blood clotting
What three tissues is the heart made up of?
Cardiac muscles tissue, nerve tissues, and connective tissues
Where is cardiac muscle found?
Only in the heart
What does cardiac muscle undergo?
Synchronized contractions and can conduct electrical impulses
How many chambers does the human heart have?
4
What are the 2 upper chambers of the heart called?
Atrium
What are the two lower chambers of the heart called?
Ventricles
Where does deoxygenated blood enter the heart from?
The right atrium
