Bohr diagrams and Lewis symbols Flashcards
Lewis symbols
Does the anion always gain a full octet of valence electrons in a Lewis symbol?
Yes it must always gain a full octet
Bohr Diagrams
What is a Bohr diagram? Give me examples of the first group.
A Bohr diagram is a diagram that shows how many protons an element has. (See photo 5)
Lewis symbols
What can lewis symbols be used to show?
Lewis symbols can be used to show the formation of an ionic compound
Lewis symbols
Does the cation have to loose all of its valence electrons?
Yes! The cation must always loose all of its valence electrons
Lewis symbols
Use lewis symbols to show the formation of a sodium chloride.
See photo 6
Lewis symbols
What is a Lewis symbol?
A lewis symbol is a simpler representation of an atom or ion than using a Bohr diagram
Lewis symbols
How do you draw a Lewis symbol?
To draw a lewis symbol, first start with the element symbol. Determine the number of valence electrons. Imagine a square box around the symbol. Place dots representing the electrons, one on each side of the box.
Lewis symbols
Use lewis symbols to show the formation of magnesium fluoride.

What is the only exception to most chemistry rules?
Hydrogen or helium
