Biology: Stem cells and specialization Flashcards
Stem cells
Where are adult or tissue stem cells found in the humanbody?
They are found through out the body where they produce specific cells needed for the organism to function.
Stem cells
What happens to embryonic cells as a human embryo develops?
Its stem cells become less versatile, and can only produce a limited range of specialized cells.
Stem cells
What is an embryonic stem cell?
is a cell that can give rise to any type of specialized cell in the organism
Stem cells
Why are stem cells special?
They can copy themselves, they can make other types of cells
Stem cells
What is a stem cell?
Are special cells used to replace damaged or dead cells
Cell specialization
What is cell specialization?
Is the process by which cells develop from similar cells into cells with specific functions within the organism
Stem cells
Can a stem cell always self renew?
No, it will loose its ability to self renew after differentiation
Stem cells
What is the definition of self renew?
Makes a copy of iself
Cell specialization
What is cell differentiation?
Is a stage in the development of an organism during which cells begin to specialize
Cell specialization
What happens to cells that start the same?
At some point they will undergo differentiation
Cell specialization
What does mitosis ensure of?
That daughter cells have identical sets of chromosomes
Cell specialization
What happens when so many of its cells genes get turned off?
It will exit the cycle and live as a specialized cell
Cell specialization
What happens when a cell matures?
As a cell matures cell differentiation continues as more of its genes get turned on or off by other nearby cells or by environmental conditions
