Circulatory System Flashcards
What is the function of the circulatory system?
Primarily associated with the transport of
*oxygen
*nutrients
*hormones
*ions
*fluids
throughout the body
**As well as the removal of metabolic waste.
What is cellular respiration?
when glucose is burned or combined with oxygen as show in the following equation:
C6H12O6 (glucose)+
6O2(oxygen) ->6CO2(carbon dioxide) +6H2O (water)
What is oxygens function in the circulatory system?
*moves down its partial pressure gradient from air into the blood of the alveolar capillaries
*most of oxygen bunds to hemoglobin in red blood cells (RBC)
*small amount dissolves in blood
**without oxygen cell would be unable to transfer the energy in glucose to ATP during cellular respiration
Carbon Dioxide function
*produced during cellular respiration
*transported away from tissue to diffuse out of alveolar capillaries
*can also bind to hemoglobin in RBC or dissolve in blood
*most travels in form of bicarbonate ions
where is metabolic waste filtered?
The kidney
a function of the kidney
help regulate the levels of fluids and ions in the blood
what is an arteriole
*very small blood vessel that branches off from artery
*carries blood away from your heart to your tissues and organs
*link up capilarries
what digested nutrients circulate to target cells to be absorbed
*glucose
*amino acids
*fats
*hormones
what is the bodies average temp
98.6 For 37C
why is the average body temperature 98.6
*optimal for metabolic precesses and defense against pathogens
function of thermoreceptors
*sensory neurons
*detect changes in temperature
*send impulses to hypothalamus
Where does hypothalamus send signals during thermoregulation
to the effectors
what are effectors
smooth muscles that surround cutaneous arterioles
what happens when body temperature is too warm
*smooth muscle relaxes
*vasodilation occurs
*^ allows for more blood to flow through capillary bed near surface if skin
*more heat is lost to its surrounding
what happens when body temperature is too cool
*smooth muscle contracts
*arterioles constrict
*vasoconstriction occurs, reducing volume of blood that flows near the bodies surface
*heat is minimized to its surroundings
