Circulatory system Flashcards
What takes blood away from the heart?
Arteries, exception- pulmonary artery
What brings blood to the heart?
Veins
What supply the heart muscles?
Coronary blood vessels
What causes a heart attack?
Blockage in an artery, bypass can be done
Cardiac cycle
Sequence of events that occurs in one complete beat of the heart
2 phases of heart cycle
Diastolic- relaxation to refill blood (top blood pressure No.) , systolic- contraction of ventricles to pump blood (bottom blood pressure No.)
Where is blood pressure the greatest
Ventricles as they move blood the furthest
Cardiac cycle order
Atrial and ventricular diastole (relaxing and filling), Atrial systole, ventricular systole (contracting and pumping)
What happens in atrial and ventricular diastole
Left and right AV valves open (bicuspid and tricuspid) are open, atria and ventricles relaxed, blood flows into left and right atria from vena cava and pulmonary artery into the ventricles
What happens in atrial systole
Atria contract forcing any remain blood into the ventricles
What happens in ventricular systole
Atria relax and start to refill, AV valves are closed but semi-lunar valves are open, ventricles contract forcing blood to the pulmonary artery and aorta, semi-lunar valves close
First “lubb” sound of the heart
Closing of AV (bicuspid and tricuspid) valves
Second “dupp” sound of the heart
closing of semi-lunar valves
Rate of blood flow depends on
How fast the heart is beating and how much blood the heart pumps out from a ventricle
Cardiac output
amount of blood leaving the ventricles every minute, = heart rate x stroke volume
