circulatory conditions Flashcards
pericarditis
inflammation of the pericardium
angina
a warning; pain in left arm/chest; coronary blood vessels are narrowed , they get clogged, NO DAMAGE , take aspirin
myocardial infarction
a heart attack; pain in chest/left arm; heart tissue lacks O2. DAMAGED, blockage
congestive heart failure
weak heart; blood moves slowly through kidneys; fluid builds up in lungs and ankles, old, kidneys can work fast enough, rare for young people, lived a good life
what can help congestive heart failure
Lasix
Lasix
Diuretic (waterpill) bathroom, weightloss
flutter
fast beat, REGULAR, test, dance
Fibrillation
fast beat IRREGULAR, usually after a heart attack, can lead to 2nd heart attack
arteriosclerosis
arteries blocked with cholesterol - hardening of the arteries, diet, heredity, can come off as Alzheimer’s
Aneurysm
wall of artery weakened (burts), bleed out nose mouth ears etc
phlebitis
swollen vein
varicose veins
valves in leg veins leak blood/ hospital strip veins, slit groin and pull them up, ripples, support stockings, hematoma> bruise
hypertension
high blood pressure - salt, exercise, weight, smoking, leads to a stroke, silent killer
thrombus
a STATIONARY blood clot, red liner on leg is an indicator
Embolus
a blood clot traveling through the bloodstream
murmur
heart valves leak blood
Pus
WBC + infection+ dead skin cells; good because it means your body is fighting
mononucleosis
swollen glands; tired; 15,000+ WBC spleen working hard
Leukemia
“cancer of the blood” ;50,000 WBC - get bone marrow transplant; WBC eat everything so bruises occur
Anemia
tired; lack of O2 in blood; less than 5 mil. RBC
sickle cell anemia
genetic; african american pop, cells look crescent like, tired, crippling, malaria usually kills them first though
agglutination
clumping of blood cells; typing
CO poisoning
exhaust from cars, old furnaces, colorless, odorless, tasteless, invisible, hemoglobin has greater attraction to CO than O2; lapse into comma
stroke
not enough O2 to the brain, you can check by short+ long term memory, smile, lift arms, etc
Erythroblastosis Fetalis
“blue baby”; RBC of second baby are deformed (+); RBC cannot hold enough O2; father (+) X mother (-) and first baby (+)
EKG
a recording of electrical beats of the heart at that moment
stethoscope
an instrument for listening to heart sounds
