4 risk factors for chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)
- Female>male
- Significant physical or emotional trauma
- Acute or chronic infection
- environmental toxins
common in rheumatologic disorders
CFS is caused by
immune response
associated with circadian dysfunction
What is physiologic fatigue
a type of fatigue that occurs when extraordinatry demands are put on an otherwise healthy person
like peripartum, poor sleep hygiene, personal/work stress
What must the patient have to be dx’d with CFS
4
- impariment of pre-illness ADLs for 6 months accompanied by fatigue
- post exertional malaise
- un-refreshing sleep
- (cog impairment or orthostatic intolerance) <– must have one or the other
What is orthostatic intolerance
othostatic hypotension
dizzy when standing up
Important to test for what in people suspected of having CFS
CBC - anemia
Urinalysis - protein/infection
TSH- thyroid issues
Chemistry/liver/lytes/kidneys

anemia
malignancy
somatic diseases
psychiatric illness
Primary treatment CFS
underlying causes
restorative sleep
wellness behaviours
plus pharmacotherpy depending on worst s/s
