Where and what age do most chondromsarcomas occur?

A

Age 40-75yo
Pelvis, proximal femur or scapula
Location is very important (can determine if benign or malignant)

What are imaging and histologic characteristics of chondrosarcoma?

A

1) blastic or lytic thickening of cortex
2) cortical destruction and soft tissue mass
3) May have popcorn mineralization on xray
4) enlarged chondrocytes with multinucleated lacunae
5) de-differentiated can have chondroid and spindle cell component

Q

How are most chondrosarcomas treated?

A

1) Grade 1 can sometimes be currettage
2) Most grade 2 or 3 are treated with wide surgical excision
3) Only mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is treated with additional chemo; no radiation
