CHLOROPLAST Flashcards
What types of the plastid are chloroplast and what are the pigment they contain ?
- They are photosynthetic plastid
2. pigment - Chlorophyll and carotenoid
What is the shape and size of the chloroplast ?
- SHAPE - Higher plants = Round , oval , lens
- Lower plants = Various shaped - spiral\ribbon like in spirogyra and cup shaped in Chlamydomonas. - SIZE - Length = 5-10 um
- Width = 2-4 um
What is no. of chloroplast in hesophyll cells and Chlamydomonas ?
Hesophyll = 20- 40 chloroplast \ cell Chlamydomonas = 1 chloroplast \ cell

What are the two types of the reaction that takes place ion the chloroplast ?
- Dark reaction
2. Light reaction
What is light reaction ?
In this
- In grana light energy in the presence of the pigments is being converted into the chemical energy.
- Product of this reaction are ATP & NADPH
What is the dark reaction and what is the Calvin cycle?
In this
- It occurs in stroma
- It is the light independent reaction
- Here CO2 through reduction by ATP & NADPH is converted into glucose.
- the above process is known as Calvin cycle
What is the marker enzyme of the dark reaction ?
Rubisco (Ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenate)
Give some features of the rubisco ?
- World’s slowest enzyme
- Turn over rate is 1-2mol of CO2 to glucose \ sec
- Most abundant proteins.
What are pyrenoids ?
In algae , central core of the protein surrounded by starch sheath CO2 fixation.
