CENTRIOLE AND CENTROSOME Flashcards
Who discovered it ?
It was discovered by T. Boveri
What is centriole ?
It is the non-membranous structure found in cytoplasm
In which organism they are present ?
They are found in the animals and the lower plants(like algae) but they are absent in the higher plants.
What is the structure of the centriole ?
It is hollow microcylindrical made up of microtubules.
Each centriole has 2 subunits and both subunits are present perpendicular to each other.
They always occur in pair.
What is the shape of the centriole ?
It is cart wheel like has 9+0 arrangement of microtubule
Give a brief description of the centriole structure
- 9 sets of triplet microtubules in the periphery and the no microtubule in the center
Total microtubule - 27 (9 set each triplet = 9*3 = 27) - The microtubule of the adjacent set are joined together by A-C or C-A linker
- The peripheral microtubule sets are joined with central hub by radial spokes (9 in number)
- In the periphery , peri-centriolar satellite \ massules \ MTG(micro tubule generator) that forms new centriole

What is the function of the centriole ?
- Helps in the cell division
2. Formation of basal body \ basal granules \ blepharoplast (forms the cytoskeleton of the cilia and flagella)
