Why is safeguarding children important to you even if you don’t work with children?
The importance of protecting children from harm is universally recognised
And
Underpins the government policy in the area of child abuse
UNCRC- the United Nations convention on the right of the child
- ensures rights of children are a priority
- children’s voices are heard
-children have the right to be protected from being hurt or mistreated physically or mentally
-encourage all international governments to ensure children are cared for with dignity and respect
-protect from violence, abuse and neglect

Who can help with safeguarding concerns ?
All organisations have a dedicated safeguarding lead to support staff in best interests of child
They should be contacted if staff are unsure what action to take as failing to act can be detrimental to the welfare and safety of a child
What is child safeguarding?
Protects children from abuse and maltreatment
Preventing harm to children’s health or development
Ensuring children grow up with provision of safe and effective care
Examples of abuse / maltreatment a child can face:
- exploitation of children including trafficking
-sexual abuse
-physical abuse
-domestic abuse
-cyber abuse
-neglectful behaviours
-grooming
What is exploitation/trafficking?
When children are tricked forced or persuaded to leave their homes
They are moved and then exploited and forced to work or sold to other crime networks
Children are trafficked for …
- sexual exploitation
-forced marriage
-domestic slavery
-forced labour in factories
-committing crimes like theft or drugs
What 4 factors increase the likelihood of abuse from within the home?
- Stress - financial problems or parent rs problems
- Social disadvantages - living on income, being discriminated against
- Mental illness, substance and domestic abuse -
- Intellectual/ physical disability of child - increased risk of neglect
Child abuse is categorised into 4 categories :
- Physical

- Neglect
What is physical abuse and its impacts ?
Deliberately harming a child and causing injuries
such as bruises, broken bones, burns, cuts
Impacts:
- immediate pain
- medical problems caused by injury
-emotional pain after injuries healed
What is child neglect and its impacts
Neglect
Persistent failure to meet a child’s basic physical or psychological needs results in impairment of a child’s health or development
Impacts
Child is hungry and not growing properly
Living in filthy clothes
Not getting medical care
What is emotional abuse and it’s impacts ?
Persistent emotional maltreatment of a child that causes adverse effects on child development

Poor self image and self esteem
Feel responsible for abusive parents
Sexual abuse and its impacts
Forcing children to take part in sexual activities
