CHF Flashcards
What is CHF?
Heart’s ventricular chamber’s ability to pump and fill is weakened or impaired causing the circulation of the blood to reduce
What kind of condition is CHF
progressive condition, can be managed but not cured
Whos most likely to develop CHF
Men are more likely to develop HF while also more likely to develop at young age – but the difference grows less with age
Etiology of CHF
CAD
Hypertension
Cardiomyopathy
MI heart attack
Non-modifiable Risk Factors of CHF
African Heritage
Congenital Heart Defects
Previous Heart Conditions
Arrhythmias – irregular heartbeats
Signs & Symptoms of CHF
LEFT SIDED: SOB
RIGHT SIDED: Swelling (in legs, ankles, abdomen)
Both: persistent cough, fatigue, nausea, confusion
Systolic Heart Failure
Left Sided HF
involves the heart’s inability to contract properly
Diastolic Heart Failure
Left Sided HF: is due to the heart’s inability to relax and fill with blood.
Right-sided Heart Failure
Happens when the right ventricle can’t pump blood to the lungs effectively, often as a result of left-sided heart failure.
Tests to identify CHF:
ECHO
BNP Blood Tests
Chest X-Ray
EKG
Cardiac Catherization
Surgeries used for CHF
Pacemaker of Heart Transplant
Stages of CHF:
At high risk for CHF
CHF Without symptoms
CHF with Symptoms
Advanced CHF
What is the most common cause of right-sided failure
Left–sided Heart Failure
