ARDS Flashcards
Overview of ARDS
–> Caused when there is swelling in the lungs and causes liquid to fill up in alveoli sacs in the lungs.
–> The fluid that fills in the sacs causes a lot of difficulty with breathing and getting air into the lungs.
Prevalence of ARDS
Factors like pneumonia, sepsis and trauma are common triggers for ARDS.
Affects about 10-15% of patients in intensive care units.
Etiology of ARDS
Direct Lung Injury
Indirect Lung injury
Pathophysiology of ARDS
- Injury Phase
- Increased Permeability, Fluid accumulation and Surfactant breakdown
- Impaired gas exchange, Ventilation-perfusion mismatch(hypoxemia) and Shunting
- Fibrosis and Repair Phase, Fibrotic changes and
Recovery potential.
Prognosis of ARDS
depends on underlying cause, severity, general health, type and timing of medical care received
can recover full or partial part of their lung function
Signs and symptoms of ARDS
- Severe Shortness of Breath (Dyspnea)
- Laboured and Rapid Breathing (Tachypnea)
- Dry Cough
- Chest Discomfort
- Fast Heart Rate (Tachycardia)
- Confusion and Extreme Tiredness
