CHAPTER ONE Flashcards
THE STUDY OF THE PERSON
What is BASIC APPROACH ?
You limit yourself on certain kinds of observations and certain ways of thinking about these patterns
It’s a systematic, self-imposed limitation
What is BIOLOGICAL APPROACH?
Understand the mind in terms of the body
Concentrates on the body and biological mechanisms such as anatomy, physiology, genetics, and evolution
What is TRAIT APPROACH?
Focuses on the ways people differ psychologically and how the differences can be measured and followed over time
What is PSYCHOANALYTIC APPROACH?
Investigation of the unconscious mind, and the nature and resolution of internal, mental conflict
What is PHENOMENOLOGICAL APPROACH?
Focus on people’s conscious experience of the world and their phenomenology (lived experience)
What is LEARNING AND COGNITIVE PROCESSES APPROACH?
Learning - How people change their behavior because of rewards, punishments, and other experiences in life. Behaviourism, social learning theory and cognitive personality psychology makes up this approach to personality
One Big Theory (OBT)
Behavior, Thought and Feeling
*To explain everything
*But it’s difficult to do everything well
Advantages and Disadvantages of OBT
Advantage: Accounting for the whole person and real-life concerns
Disadvantage: over-inclusiveness or unfocused research
Pigeonholing
is to unfairly think of or describe (someone or something) as belonging to a particular group, having only a particular skill, etc.
What are the 5 different APPROACHES ?
-TRAIT APPROACH
-BIOLOGICAL APPROACH
-PSYCHOANALYTIC APPROACH
-PHENOMENOLOGICAL APPROACH
-LEARNING AND COGNITIVE PROCESSES APPROACH
What is PERSONALITY?
An individual’s characteristic patterns of thought, emotion, and behavior, together with the psychological mechanisms – hidden or not – behind those patterns
An individual’s unique and relatively consistent patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving
Influences (laws, peers, needs, wants, motivations, attitudes, substances)
You have been practicing your personality since birth and shapes itself over life
The basic approaches or paradigms of personality psychology

c. are useful because one approach cannot sufficiently explain all of personality.
d.are not useful because they are too limited.
c. are useful because one approach cannot sufficiently explain all of personality.
What is a strength of personality psychology?
a,It uses pigeonholing.
b.It treats all people as if they were the same.
c. The basic approaches ignore areas they cannot explain.
d.It is inclusive, interesting, and important.
d.It is inclusive, interesting, and important.
What obligation does personaloty psychlogy share?
Understanding the whole person not just parts of of persons
What is the difficulty of understanding a person as a whole?
You try to understand evrything about a person at once which can be overwhelming. This is why you need to look for certian patterns instaed (basic observtaion approches)
