Chapter 9.4 Classification and 9.5 Domains and Kingdoms Flashcards
What is taxonomy?
The process of identifying and classsifying things.
What is binomial nomenclature?
A system of classificaton developed in the 1700s by a Swedish scientist named Carolus Linnaeus
It is a two word naming system where the first name is genus and the second name is species.
What are the levels of classification most general to most specific (highest to lowest)?
Domain Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species
What is the mnemonic for remembering the levels of classification?
Dear King Phillip Came Over For Good Soup
What is a scientific name?
The two-part scientifically recognized name given to an organism, consisting of its genus and species
Why is it difficult to understand scientific names?
They are usually in Latin or Greek
What is phylogeny?
The study of how living and extinct organisms are related to one another
What is a clade?
A group of species that includes a single common ancestor and all decendants of that ancestor
What is a cladogram?
A diagram that links groups of organisms by showing how evolutionary lines, or lineages branched off from common ancestors
What is a derived character?
A trait that arose in the most recent common ancestor of a particular lineage and passed to its decendants
When an organism is above a derived character on a cladogram, does the organism HAVE that derived character or LACK that derived character?
Have
How are organisms placed into domains and kingdoms?
Based on
- Cell type
- Their ability to make food
- The number of cells that make up their bodies
What broad characteristics do scientists use to group living things into kingdoms?
Cellular characteristics and method of nutrition
What are the three domains?
- Bacteria
- Archaea
- Eukarya
What are the 6 kingdoms?
- Eubacteria
- Archaebacteria
- Protista
- Fungi
- Plantae
- Animalia
