Chapter 4.2 Human Population Flashcards
What is demography?
The study of information about human populations
What is birth rate?
The number of live births per 1000 people in a year
What is death rate?
The number of deaths per 1000 people in a year
How is population growth rate (PGR) calculated?
Birth rate - Death rate
What is age structure?
Refers to the number of people at each different age level
Information is shown in an age graph
When large amount of population is children, population is
a. Stable
b. Declining
c. Growing

List 4 human activities that affect the biosphere.
- Hunting and gathering
- Agriculture
- Industrialization
- Urban development
How do scientists think hunting and gathering affected the biosphere?
They hypothesize that humans who arrived to N. America 12,000 years ago caused a major extinction of animals (i.e. wooly mammoth, saber-tooth tiger)
Define agriculture
The practice of farming, which includes growing fruit, vegetables and grains and raising animals
Define industrialization
Adding machines and factories to civilization
What is urban development?
As cities became crowded people moved to suburbs
How does urban developmemt affect the biosphere?
It causes stress on plant and animal populations.
How are humans different than other populations?
Humans can grow their own resources as well as control some limiting factors such as disease.
