Chapter 3.5 Ecological Succession Flashcards
Define community.
Community is made up of populations or organisms that live in a common area.
What is a limiting factor?
Anything that limits an organism’s ability to live in a particular environment.
What is an example of a limiting factor?
Lack of water causes grass to die causing certain herd populations to decrease.
What is tolerance?
The ability of living things to survive the changes in their environment
What is succession?
The process of gradual, natural change and species replacement that takes place in the communities of an ecosystem over time
List are the two types of succession?
Primary
Secondary
What is primary succession?
Succession that takes place on land where there are no living organisms
What is an example of primary succession?
Succession after a volcano erupts
What is the first species to populate an area called?
Pioneer species
What is secondary succession?
Pattern of changes that takes place after an existing community is destroyed
What are some examples of secondary succession?
Fires set by lightning
Farming
Floods
A stable community formed after primary or secondary succession once little or no change occurs is called what?
Climax community
Which type of succession may lead more quickly to climax community?
Secondary
Food availablility and temperature can be a what for a particular organism?
Limiting factor
