Chapter 9: Respiratory System Flashcards
What is the purpose of the respiratory system?
The respiratory system is responsible for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. It has an excretory function as it eliminates carbon dioxide, alcohol and certain drugs from the body. It interfaces with the cardiovascular system.
List the structures of the respiratory system
Nasal cavity, nose, mouth, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, diaphragm, lungs, epiglottis
What is the name of the dome-shaped muscle that lies under the lungs? What does it do?
Diaphragm. This muscle assists in breathing. It separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity. It is also a pump for the lymphatic system.
The lungs work to assist what other system and why?
Lungs work to assist the cardiovascular system as they remove carbon dioxide and replenish oxygen which is then pumped by the heart throughout the body.
