Chapter 1: History and Theory Flashcards
What is the definition of reflexology?
Reflexology is the study of reflexes. Reflexology therapies are natural therapeutic methods derived from this study based on the principle that there are reflexes on the feet/hands that map to every other part, gland, and organ of the body.
Through the application of pressure on these reflexes, reflexology therapy can:
- Relieve tension
- Improve circulation
- Support the body’s efforts to function optimally
- Promote natural healing
- Align foot structure
- Aid in proper foot function
- Restore deep quality of sleep
Name the four things a reflexologist does NOT do?
- Diagnose
- Prescribe
- Treat for specific conditions
- Use instruments we are not trained to use
Do we have the same routine for all clients? If not who is it modified for and how?
For clients who are very young, very old, very ill, pregnant, pre or post-surgery, heart patients and diabetic patients we would do shorter, more frequent sessions with a lighter touch. We would do more sweeping and gentle massage.
How often do we give a reflexology session?
Every 24-48 hours for acute conditions or up to once a week for chronic conditions.
How do you judge the amount of pressure you should use?
Do a rating system with the client. Make sure the amount of pressure is in the tolerable zone for them. Ask them about their preference.
