Chapter 8- Nervous System Flashcards
What is the Central Nervous System (CNS)?
The brain and spinal cord
What is the Peripheral Nervous Sytem (PNS)?
The cranial nerves and spinal nerves
Is the communication between the CNS and the rest of the body. Are the wires that allow your CNS to communicate with the rest of your body
What are the two divisions of the PNS?
- Sensory (afferent)
- Motor (efferent)
What means afferent?
Sensory, input
What means efferent?
Motor, output
What are the three functions of the CNS?
- Sensory input
- Integration
- Motor output
Sensory…..
Detects and sends the info
Integration…
Decides what to do with the info
Motor input….
The response that occurs when the nervous system activates certain parts of the body
What are the two systems of the motor (efferent) division?
- Somatic Nervous System
- Autonomic Nervous System
What is the somatic nervous system?
Voluntary
Rules your skeletal muscle movement
What is the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)?
Involuntary
Keeps your heart beating, your lungs breathing, and your stomach churning
What are the two divisions of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)?
- Sympathetic division
- Parasympathetic division
What is the sympathetic division?
Mobilizes the body into action and gets it all fired up (fight or flight)
What is the parasympathetic division?
Relaxes the body and talks it down. Rest or digest
What is the Nervous system made of?
Cells called Neurons
What are the functions of the neuron?
Respond to stimuli and transmit signals
What are the parts of the neuron?
- Dendrites
- Cell body
- Axon
- Synaptic Knob
Dendrites…
Receives incoming signals
Cell body…
Contains nucleus
Axon…
Is the talker, extended cable. Releases neurotransmitters (chemical).
Transmit electrical impulses AWAY FROM THE CELL BODY to other cells
Action potential
What are the three types of neurons?
- Unipolar
- Bipolar
- Multipolar (most common)
Unipolar neurons…
Are mostly sensory neurons
One process extend from the cell body
Found mainly in the PNS
Commonly in the root ganglia
Multipolar neurons…
Are mostly motor and sends impulses away from the CNS. Are also association neurons inside the CNS between them send info.
The multipolar neuron has more insulation and has faster action potential.
Has many processes extend from the cell body
Most of them are interneurons that send impulses to the muscles
What is the myelin sheath?
Like the plastic casing around and electrical cord, insulates the electrical impulse
Bipolar neurons…
Has two processes extend from the cell body
Special senses
Rare
What means ganglia?
Gang of neurons
