Chapter 8 Flashcards
1
Q
What is the pathway that air moves through the body
A
Mouth or nostril —> nasal cavity —> Pharynx —> Larynx —> Trachea —> Bronchi & bronchioles —> alveoli
2
Q
What are the organs of the respiratory system
A
The nose, the trachea, the bronchi and two lungs
3
Q
Respiration equation
A
Oxygen + glucose —> carbon dioxide + energy + water
4
Q
What is the main role of the respiratory system
A
The exchange of gas (oxygen and carbon dioxide) between the body and the environment
5
Q
Why is the respiratory system important
A
As all cells require oxygen to metabolism food in cellular respiration
6
Q
what are the 5 reasons that the lungs are well suited to their gas exchange function
A
- The alveoli give the lungs a huge internal surface area (large amounts exchanged
- each alveolus is well supplied with blood vessels so that as much blood as possible is close to the air in the alveolus (maintains different concentration)
- thin wall
- deep in body to prevent evaporation of fluid that cover respiratory surfaces
- lung volume can be changed by movements of the respiratory surfaces
