Chapter 16 Flashcards
explain the formation of eggs
formation begins during foetal development. cells in ovary undergo a number of divisions but stop dividing before any eggs are actually formed. immature eggs remain in resting phase for many years.
what is a primary follicle
dormant egg within the ovary. formed when cells within the ovary surround each immature egg to produce a sphere composed of a single layer of cell. occurs before puberty
what is a secondary follicle
cells creating the wall of the primary follicle begin to enlarge and divide, creating a layer of cells around the developing egg. secretions of these new cells create a fluid filled space that forces the egg to the edge of the follicle. occurs during puberty
what is a mature follicle
when the secondary follicle continues to enlarge and produces a bulge in the ovary. also called Graafian follicle
what is ovulation
when mature follicle bursts and expels the egg. moves through uterine tube
what are the 7 structures that make up the ovarian cycle
- Primary Follicle
- developing follicle
- secondary follicle
- mature follicle
- ruptured follicle (ovulation)
- Corpus Luteum
- Corpus Albicans
what is the corpus luteum
when the ruptured follicle collapses and the blood inside forms a clot. Clot slowly absorbed by remaining follicle cells which enlarges. secretes hormones that affect development of uterus lining
what is the corpus albicans
fibrous mass of scar tissue left on the ovary after the corpus luteum degenerates
what is the menstrual cycle
regular series of changes that take place in the walls of the uterus
what is the endometrium
soft mucous membrane lining the uterus
