Chapter 8: 1.7 - Purine and Carbohydrate Disorder Flashcards
Other name for purine disorders
Lesch-Nyahan
-failure to inherit the gene to produce the enzyme Hypoxanthine guanine phosphoribosyltransferase
Purine Disorders (Lesch-Nyahan Disease)
enzyme not inherited in Leshc-Nyhan disease
hypoxanthine guanine phosphoribosyltranferase
- severe motor defects,
- mental retardation,
- tendecy toward self-destruction, -gout and renal calculi
Lesch-Nyahan Disease
= Purine disorder
Purine Disorder
-Urine color
texture
Orange sand in diapers = uric acid
- presence of increased urinary sugar which is most frequently due to an inherited disorder
Melituria
results in infant failure to thrive, combined with
- liver disorders
- cataracts
- severe mental retardation
Galactosuria - failure to convert galactose to glucose
Galactosuria:
can be caused by defieciency of any of the three enzymes:
- galactose-1-phosphate
- galactokinase
- UDP-glactose-4-epimerase
galactoseuria enzyme deficiency:
- severe, fatal symptoms assoc with galacosemia
- included in newborn screening
galactose-1-phosphate uridyl transferase (GALT)
galactoseuria enzyme deficiency:
-can result in cataracts in adulthood
galactokinase
galactoseuria enzyme deficiency:
-may be asymptomatic or produce mildy symptoms
UDP-galactose-4-epimerase
Glactose and Fructose test:
result
- dipstick
- clinitest
- dipstick = (-)
- clinitest/copper reduction = (+)
Melituria
-may be seen during pregnancy and lactation
Lactosuria
Melituria:
assoc. with parenteral feeding
Fructosuria
