CHAPTER 7: MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM Flashcards
Male reproductive organs
externally: penis and scrotum
internally: major portion of vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate gland
sperm (spermatozoon)
microscopic male germ cell which when united with ovum, produces a zygote (fertilized egg) that develops into an embryo
seminiferous tubules
up to 900 coiled tubes within the testes in which spermatogenesis occurs
epididymis
a coiled tube atop each of the testes that provides for storage, transit, and maturation of sperm, continues with the vas deferens
vas deferens, ductus deferens, or seminal duct
duct that carries sperm from epididymis to urethra
seminal vesicles
2 main glands located posterior to the base of the bladder that open into the vas deferens. Glands secrete a thick fluid that forms part of the semen
prostate gland
encircles the upper end of the urethra. secretes a fluid that aids in the movement of the sperm and ejaculation
scrotum
sac containing the tests and epididymus
glans penis
enlarged tip on the end of the penis
prepuce
fold of skin covering the glans penis in uncircumsized males (foreskin)
semen
composed of sperm, seminal fluids, and other secretions
Flow of sperm
Formed in the seminerous tubules inside the testes, to the epididymis, to the vas deferens through the seminal vesicle and duct, to the urethra through the prostate gland and through the penis out of the body
balan/o
glans penis
orchid/o, orchi/o, orch/o, test/o
testis, testicle
prostat/o
prostate gland
