Horatio Nelson
British Admiral who destroyed most of the French fleet stationed in Egypt in the Battle of the Nile.
Napoleon Bonaparte
A brilliant military leader who could be described as ruthlessly ambitious.
Directory
A weak governing board that ended when Napoleon seized power in what is known as a coup d’état, a forced transfer of power.
Consulate
The government after Napoleon pulled off the coup on the Directory. As First Consul in the Consulate, Napoleon was a dictator. The French people welcomed Napoleon because he promised order after the craziness of the Revolution.
Plebiscite
A vote that made Napoleon emperor of France in 1804. He then moved to build a strong, centralized government in France.
Louisiana Territory
Napoleon sold his holdings in the American South because he needed the money to fight the British during the Napoleonic Wars.
Continental System
A policy which restricted France, their allies, and conquered territories from trading with Great Britain.
Nationalism
A sense of unity and patriotism as a people.
Czar Alexander I
Russian monarch when Napoleon invaded his country in 1812. Napoleon’s army was troubled from the start by disloyalty, problems with supplies, and misery caused by summer heat.
100 Days (Hundred Days)
A brief period of time when Napoleon busted out of prison, regained control of France, and raised an army only to lose it at the Battle of Waterloo at the hands of Great Britain and Prussia commanded by The Duke of Wellington.
St. Helena
The second and final exile of Napoleon. Located 1200 miles from the nearest land, the volcanic island held Napoleon until his death six years later.
Congress of Vienna
A huge conference of European countries to create a plan to restore some of the monarchies (including France) that Napoleon had eliminated as well as strengthening the nations surrounding France.
Prince Metternich
Prince Metternich’s views dominated the Congress of Vienna. He worked very hard to take away freedoms of the press and religion that were established under Napoleon and the lands he occupied.
As a result…
As a result of their victory against Napoleonic France, Great Britain received their overseas colonies.
Indemnity
“You break it, you buy it”. France was required to pay a large indemnity to other countries for causing damages.
