Chapter 6: Patient Education And Drug Therapy Flashcards
Teaching needs to focus on the 3 domains of learning. What are they?
- Cognitive
- Affective
- Psychomotor
Cognitive Domain
The level at which basic knowledge is learned and stored. It is the thinking portion of the learning process and incorporates an individual’s previous experiences and perceptions.
Affective Domain
The most intangible component of the learning process. It is conduct that expresses feelings, needs, beliefs, values and opinions.
Psychomotor Domain
Involves the learning of a new procedure or skill and is often called the “doing” domain. Ex) asking patients for a return demonstrations.
Assessment of Learning Needs related to drug therapy is
Crucial in patient education process, just like the nursing process.
What are the specific variables that nurses need to assess when it comes to learning?
Age, adaptation to any illness, language barriers, cognitive abilities, cultural background, emotional status, family relationships, generational differences, etc.
Nursing Diagnoses related to learning needs and drug therapy
Falls, Risk for Health Maintenance, ineffective Health Management, ineffective Health Management, Readiness for Enhanced Injury, Risk for Knowledge, Deficient Knowledge, Readiness for Enhanced Memory, Impaired Noncompliance Powerlessness Sleep Pattern, Distrurbed
Planning: Outcome Identification as related to learning needs and drug therapy
Patient and nurse identify goals and outcome criteria. Must be measurable, realistic, based on patient needs, stated in patient terms and time frame.
Implementation Related to Patient Education and Drug Therapy
- Conduct teaching-learning sessions
- Take into consideration age-related changes
- Consideration of language barriers
- Give clear, simple instructions
- Safe administration of medications at home (return with demonstration equipment)
Evaluation of patient learning related to drug therapy
Validates whether learning has occurred: ask questions, have the patient provide a return demonstration, behavior (such as compliance and adherence to schedule), occurrence of few or no complications.
If a patient’s behavior is characteristic of noncompliance or inadequate levels of learning, the nurse must
Develop, implement and evaluate a new plan of teaching.
