Chapter 6 Flashcards
The purpose of descriptive research
To help us describe the charcteristics of a sample pop being examamined
Survey research
One that utilizes observational techniques to collect data
Cross-sectional survey design
-uses a single group of participants and surveys that single group once
Sucessive independent samples survey design
2 or more samples of respondents answer the same question at differnt points in time. (1 group answers the question, later on another group answers the same question)
Logitudinal or panel design
Tests the same set of participants at multiple time points
Demographic research
Describing patterns of basic life events and experiences and has a purpose of decribing changes in society
Statistical notation
-used ro reprent data and helps scientists understand across a wide range of areas
Frequency distributions
Summarize raw data by showing the number of scores that fall into each of several broad catagories
Simple frequency distribution
The number of participants who obtained each score
Grouped frequency distrubutions
Taking info from simple freq and placing them into groups or intervals
Relative frequency
what poportion of my total does an interval represent
2 ways to display frequency distribution
- Freq histrogram
2. Freq polygons
3 measures of central tendency
- Mean
- Median
- Mode
Confidence interval (error bars)
The confidence in the value of the mean.
3 Measures of variability
- Range
- Variance
- Standard Deviation
