Chapter 6 Flashcards
Allergen
A substance that produces an allergic response in an individual
Anaphylaxis
A severe systemic response to an allergen
Antibiotic
Medications capable of inhibiting growth or killing pathogenic bacteria
Anti-body
A disease fighting protein created by the immune system in response to the presence of a specific antigen
Antifungal
An agent that destroys or inhibits the growth of fungi
Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome
The advanced stage of an HIV infection
Antigen
Any substance that the body regards as being foreign
Autoimmune disorder
Condition in which the immune system produces antibodies against the bodies the body’s own tissues
Bacilli
Rod shaped spore forming bacteria
Bacteria
One celled microscopic organisms
Carcinoma
Malignant tumor that occurs in epithelial tissue
Cytomegalovirus
Type of herpesvirus found in most body fluids
Ductal carcinoma in situ
Breast cancer at earliest stage before the cancer has broken through the wall of the milk duct
Herpes zoster
Acute viral infection characterized by painful skin eruption’s that follow underlying route of inflamed nerve
Hodgkin’s lymphoma
Malignancy of lymphatic system that is distinguished from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma by presence of Reed Sternberg cells
Human immunodeficiency virus
Blood-borne pathogen that damages or kills the T cells of immune system causing it to progressively fail
Immunoglobulins
Anti-bodies that bind with specific antigens in the antigen-antibody response
Immunosuppressant
Substance that prevent or reduces body’s normal immune response
Infectious mononucleosis
Infection caused by Epstein-Barr virus that is characterized by fever sore throat and enlarged lymph nodes
Immunotherapy
Disease treatment that involves either stimulating or repressing the immune response
Infiltrating ductal carcinoma
Breast cancer that starts in milk duct Break through the wall of that duct and invades the fatty breast tissue
Lymphadenitis
Inflammation of the lymph nodes
Lymphadenopathy
Any disease process affecting a lymph node or nodes
Lymphangioma
A benign tumor formed by an abnormal collection of lymphatic vessels
Lymphedema
Swelling of the tissues due to abnormal accumulation of fluid in tissues
Lymphoma
Malignancies affecting lymphoid tissues
Lymphoscintigraphy
Diagnostic testing is performed to detect damage or malformations of lymphatic vessels
Malaria
Disease caused by parasite that lives in certain mosquitoes and transferred to humans by bite of infected mosquito
Mammography
Radiographic examination of breast to detect the presence of tumors or precancerous cells
Meta-stasis
New Cancer site that results from spreading process
Metastasize
Process where cancer spreads from one place to another
Myoma
Benign tumor made of muscle tissue
Myosarcoma
Malignant tumor derived from muscle tissue
Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
All lymphomas other than Hodgkin’s lymphoma
Opportunistic infection
Caused by pathogen that doesn’t normally produce an illness in healthy humans
Osteosarcoma
Hard tissue sarcoma that usually involves the upper shaft of long bones, pelvis, or knee
Parasite
Plant or animal that lives on or within another living organism at the expense of that organism
Pathogen
Disease producing micro organism
Rabies
Acute viral infection transmitted to humans by bite or saliva of infected animal
Rickettsia
Small bacterium that lives in lice, fleas, ticks, mites
Rubella
Viral infection characterized by a low-grade fever, swollen glands, inflamed eyes, fine pink rash
Sarcoma
Malignant tumor that arises from connective tissue
Spirochetes
Long slender spiral shaped bacteria that have flexible walls and are capable of movement
Splenomegaly
Abnormal enlargement of spleen
Staphylococci
Group of about 30 species of bacteria that form irregular groups are clusters resembling grapes
Streptococci
Bacteria that form a chain. Most = harmless, some = strep throat
Telethraphy
Radiation therapy administered at a distance from body that is precisely targeted with use of 3-D computerized imaging
Tetanus
Acute, potentially fatal infection of central nervous system caused by a toxin and produced by tetanus bacteria
Toxoplasmosis
Parasite most commonly transmitted from animals to humans by contact with contaminated feces
Varicella
Highly contagious infection caused by the herpesvirus varicella zoster, a.k.a. chickenpox
Antigen-antibody reaction
Binding antigens to anti-bodies
Complement
Normally circulate in the blood in inactive form
Interferon
Produced in response to antigens (virus or tumors) activate immune system
Lymphocytes
Formed in bone marrow as stem cells
Lymphokines
Substance produced by lymphocytes the acts upon other cells
Macrophage
Type of leukocyte that surrounds and kills invading cells
