Chapter 5B Flashcards
operant conditioning
a learning process in which the likelihood of a voluntary behavior occurring is determined by its consequences.
is operant conditioning voluntary or involuntary
it requires the learner to be active and voluntarily aware of the behavior they are exhibiting
what is the three phase model of operant conditioning
antecedent:
any environmental stimuli that triggers an action
behavior:
any action
consequences:
something that increases or decreases the likleihood of the behaviour occuring again.
what are the two main consequences in operant conditioning
reinforcement and punishment
what is the effect of a punishment
decreases the likelihood of a behavior reoccurring in the future
what is the effect of reinforcement
increases the likelihood of a behavior reoccurring
positive reinforcement
occurs when a behavior is followed by adding a desirable or pleasant stimulus, increasing the likelihood of the behavior reoccurring.
negative reinforcement
occurs when a behavior is followed by the removal of a undesirable stimulus, increasing the likelihood of the behavior occurring again.
positive punishment
occurs when a behavior is followed by adding an undesirable or unpleasant stimulus, decreasing the likelihood of the behavior occurring again.
negative punishment
occurs when a behavior is followed by the removal of a desirable or pleasant stimulus, decreasing the likelihood of the behavior reoccurring
