stress
is a state of mental, emotional and physiological tension in response to a stressor.
stressor
is something that is perceived as challenging or threatening our ability to cope.
internal stress
causes of stress that originate within an individual and can be both psychological and biological.(e.g. biological pain, psychological feelings)
external stress
sources of stress that originate outside of an individual. (e.g. environment: loud noises, sociocultural: life events)
acute stress
is sudden or short term is usually more intense or more severe, can be beneficial and help us deal with challenges
chronic stress
ongoing prolonged or long term less intense or less severe, generally more detrimental to our health.

what is cortisol and when is it released
a hormone that is released during chronic stress and allows the body to stay on high alert over long periods of time.
what does cortisol do
regulates a wide range of processes throughout the body, including metabolism and the immune response.
cortisol has an important role in:
-boosting energy levels and increasing blood glucose levels.
-heightening our alertness, increasing the brains use of glucose.
-increasing the body’s ability to repair tissue
-diverting energy from non-essential bodily functions such as digestion, growth and reproduction.
