Chapter 52 Flashcards
scales of ecology
global, landscape, ecosystem, community, population, organismal
global ecology
biosphere, sum of the planets ecosystem, examines how the regional exchange of energy and materials influences organisms
landscape ecology
the factors controlling exchanges of energy materials and organisms across multiple ecosystems
ecosystem ecology
energy glow and chemical cycling between organisms and the environment
community ecology
how interactions between sepcies such as predation affect a community
population ecology
analyzes factors that affect population size and why it changes
organismal ecology
how an organisms structure, physiology, and behavior will react with its environment
four major abiotic components of climate
temperature, precipitation, sunlight, wind
sunlight intensity
varying light intensity will affect climate, higher latitude-less sunlight
microclimate
localized patterns in climatic conditions. ex. casting shade, altering evaporation, changing wind patterns
rainshadow
rising air releases moisture on the windward side of a peak and creates a rain shadow as it absorbs moisture on the leeward side. can create a desert on the back side of a mountain range
Earth’s tilt
affects solstices,
tropical forest
very humid, high temperatures no change for seasons, very nutrient poor soils
plants-broadleaf everygreen, shrubs, succulents,
animals- very camo/poisonous frogs, parrots
deserts
very hot or very cold, located near north and south latitude bands, low precipitation, very sandy or gravelly, nutrient poor soil,
plants- adapt to the extreme temps, physical defenses like plants, C4 CAM plants, cacti
animals- noctunural, snakes lizards, scorpians, birds
savanas
