Chapter 5 - Respiration and Breathing System Flashcards
Respiration
The release of energy from food
What is the function of our breathing system?
Our breathing system allows us to take oxygen into our bodies and it also allows us to get rid of the waste products that are produced in respiration
Aerobic respiration
Aerobic respiration needs oxygen to release energy from food
What is the equation for aerobic respiration?
oxygen + glucose –> energy + carbon dioxide + water vapour
O2 + C6H12O6 –> Energy + CO2 + H2O
What is breathing?
The way in which animals take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide and water
What happens when we breathe in?
Oxygen passes from our lungs to our bloodstream. The blood then carries the oxygen to all cells of our body The oxygen is used in each cell to carry out respiration
What waste products are produced in cellular respiration?
Carbon dioxide and water vapour
What happens when we breath out?
The carbon dioxide and water vapour produced in respiration enter the bloodstream and are carried to the lungs. The carbon dioxide and water vapour pass from the blood into the lungs and are breathed out
What is the function of the nose?
The nose cleans, warms and moistens air
What is the function of the trachea?
The trachea carries air to and from the lungs
What is the function of the bronchi?
The bronchi carry air between the trachea and the lungs
What is the function of the bronchioles?
The bronchioles allow air to pass to and from the alveoli
What is the function of the alveoli?
The alveoli allow gas exchange
What is the function of the diaphragm and the intercostal muscles?
The diaphragm and the intercostal muscles cause air to move in or out of the lungs
What is the % of nitrogen in inhaled air versus exhaled air
Inhaled - 78%
Exhaled - 78%
