Chapter 24 - Metals & Non-metals Flashcards
What are the properties of metals?
○Conduct electricity ○Malleable ○Shiny ○Sonorous ○Ductile ○Hard and strong ○Conduct heat ○High density
What are some of the exceptions to the properties of metals?
○Alkali metals are soft with low densities
○Mercury is liquid at room temperature
What are the properties of non-metals?
○Usually liquids or gases ○Brittle ○Low melting points ○Poor conductors of electricity ○Poor heat conductors
What are some of the exceptions to the properties of non-metals?
○Carbon in the form of graphite is a good conductor of electricity
○Carbon in the form of diamonds is extremely hard with high melting point
Alloy
A mixture of metals
What is the composition of brass and what is it used for?
Copper + zinc
Musical instruments, ornaments
What is the composition of bronze and what is it used for?
Copper + tin
Statues
What is the composition of solder and what is it used for?
Lead + tin
Soldering
What is the composition of mild steel and what is it used for?
Iron + carbon
Building reinforcements
What is the composition of stainless steel and what is it used for?
Iron + chromium + nickel
Knives, sinks
What is the composition of alnico and what is it used for?
Aluminium + nickel + cobalt
Powerful magnets
Rusting
corrosion of iron
How does rusting occur?
Iron/steel reacts with both water and oxygen and forms iron oxide/rust.
What affect does rust have on metal?
This orange/brown substance flakes away and eventually all the metal is corroded
What condition is necessary for rusting to occur?
In order for rusting to occur, both water and oxygen must be present
