Chapter 13 - Photosynthesis Flashcards
Photosynthesis
The way in which green plants make food
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide + water —-sunlight—-chlorophyll—-> glucose + oxygen
What are the four factors needed for photosynthesis to occur?
- Carbon dioxide
- Water
- Light
- Chlorophyll
What are the products of photosynthesis?
- Glucose
2. Oxygen
What is chlorophyll?
○Green dye/pigment
○Mostly found in leaves and other green parts of plant
○Absorbs light and allows photosynthesis to take place
Tropism
The way in which a plant changes in response to an outside stimulus
Phototropism
The way in which a plant changes its growth in response to light
Explain what the effect of phototropism is on plants
The shoots of a plant respond by growing towards the light. This allows the leaves to absorb as much light as possible so they can in turn make more food
Geotropism
Change in the growth of a plant in response to gravity
Explain what the effect of geotropism is on plants
○The shoots of a plant respond by growing away from gravity. This allows the stem to grow upright so the leaves get more light
○The roots of the plant grow towards gravity. This allows the roots to grow down into the soil and anchor the plant and absorb more minerals and water
