Chapter 29 - Water Hardness Flashcards
How is hard water formed?
It is formed when water (excellent solvent) dissolves calcium ions or magnesium ions as it passes through various rocks (mainly limestone)
What happens when the ions in hard water react with soap?
They form an insoluble compound which floats on top of water as scum
What is soft water ?
Water that lathers easily with soap
How can water be softened?
π§ Boiling
π§ Distillation
π§ Ion exchange
Explain how ion exchange works
As water passes through the ion exchanger, calcium and magnesium ions are swapped for sodium ions giving you soft water
What are the advantages of hard water?
ππ» Good source of calcium
ππ» Tastes nicer
ππ» Good for tanning and brewing
What are the disadvantages of hard water?
ππ» Limescale blocks pipes and leaves scale on kettles and pipes
ππ» Wastes soap
ππ» Produces scum with soap
What is hard water?
Water that doesnβt lather easily with soap
