6
Q

What are the functions of plasma membrane?

A
  • Transport (controls what enters/exits the cell)
  • Signalling (some IMP’s act as receptors for hormones)
  • Identification (self or non-self?)
  • Connection (cells are sharing proteins to attach to each other)

IMP

A

Integrated Membrane Proteins. They’re embedded in the cell membrane.

Q

Endoplasmic Reticulum

A

Network of connecting membraneous walled sacs and canals. They’re the packing systems and transport proteins through the cytoplasm.

11
Q

What’s the difference between rough and smooth E.R?

A

Rough-w/ ribosomes (protein synthesis)
Smooth-w/o ribosomes. Protein transportation. Makes lipids and carbohydrates. Removes & stores calcium from the cell.

Q

Ribosomes

A

Protein factories. It is an enzyme which is made up of a large and small subunit of rRNA and protein. Reads the rRNA as it goes through and then creates copy.

Q

Golgi Apparatus

A

Membranous organelle thats a group of stacked, flattened sacs near nucleus. It receives and processes protein molecules from the ER. Produce enzymes that are packaged and transported to the cell membrane.

16
Q

Lysosomes

A

Contain digestive enzymes (dead waste). It breaks down molecules into small molecules that can be used again.

17
Q

Ribosomes break off the Golgi Apparatus T | F

A

False

18
Q

Mitochondria

A

Tiny sacs that have walls composed of inner and outer membranes. It is the site of cellular respiration, and is the powerhouse of the cell.

19
Q

Cell is alive because of the ____________:

A

Mitochondria

20
Q

Mitochondria2

A

Each contains one DNA which allows it to produce enzymes and replicate itself.

21
Q

Centrioles

A

Paired organelles which are rod shaped. Helps cell division.

22
Q

Cytoskeleton

A

Cells framework which allows movement of cells.

23
Q

Cilia

A

Fine hairs for mobility and helps substances move through.

24
Q

Flagellum

A

Single projection. “Tail”

25
Q

Microvilli

A

Covers epithelial cells where absorption s important, which provides structure & movement.

26
Q

Nucleus

A

Brain of the cell. Contains DNA, and controls cell reproduction.

27
Q

Structure of the nucleus?

A

2 Layers; nuclear pores.

28
Q

Chromatin Granule

A

When cells are non-dividing?

29
Q

3 Major types of direct cell connections:

A
  • Desmosomes
  • Gap Junctions
  • Tight Junctions
30
Q

Desmosomes

A

“spot” or “belt”

31
Q

Gap Junctions

A

Membrane channels of adjacent cells connect to each other

32
Q

Tight Junctions

A

Holds sheets of cells close together
