CHAPTER 4 - TEST Flashcards
What is the purpose of cellular respiration?
To convert sugar into usable energy
Do all organisms perform cellular respiration? If not, which organisms do and which do not?
Yes, all perform respiration. Without energy, they die
What is the usable form of energy for the cell? Why does the cell need this form instead of the energy in sugar molecules?
ATP
If all the energy stored in the sugar within a cell were released at once, the energy would destroy that cell
In humans, how does breathing benefit aerobic cellular respiration? Could your cells perform aerobic cellular respiration if you were not breathing?
Breathing adds the necessary oxygen. Without breathing there no oxygen.
In what organelle does aerobic cellular respiration
occur?
Mitochondria
Describe three differences between aerobic and anaerobic cellular respiration.
Aerobic produces 15x more energy
Aerobic has oxygen present
They have different products (water vs alcohol/lactic acid)
Photosynthesis
What is the purpose of photosynthesis?
To convert sunlight into usable energy
Which organisms perform photosynthesis and which do not?
Plants and algae can
No one else can
How do those organisms that do not perform photosynthesis obtain an energy source (sugar)?
What is the ultimate source of energy for living things? How do you know this?
What is the primary pigment of photosynthesis?
Where is this pigment located?
List the two primary products of photosynthesis. Explain why each is vital to your existence.
Which side of the diagram in Figure 4-9 represents the light-independent reactions of photosynthesis? Give two reasons for your answer.
Why doesn’t the light-independent phase need light? In what way does the light-independent phase actually depend on light?
List three things that can stop photosynthesis.
