Group Membership
the state of belonging to or being a part of a group or an
organization.
Subcultures are a group whose
members share beliefs and common experiences that set them apart from other members of a culture.
Homogeneity
Degree to which members are similar in one or several ways
that are critical to the group’s work
Heterogeneity
Degree to which members differ in one or more ways that are
critical to the group’s work
Group Cohesiveness
The strength of the bonds that link members to the group;
Attraction selection attribution explains
how the personality of an organization is created and retained.
Attraction
individuals with similar personalities tend to be attracted to an organization.
Selection
individuals with similar personalities tend to be hired by the organization.

Social loafing
Individuals put forth less effort in a group than individually.
Social Facilitation
Individuals are motivated to look good to others and want to
maintain a positive self-image
Conformity

Types of Conformity:
Informational
Normative
Identification
Informational Conformity
When an individual is unsure of the correct response or behavior in a particular situation,
Normative Conformity
When an individual desires to fit in with a group and not be rejected by
the group
Identification Conformity
when an individual conforms to the expectations of a social role.
Compliance
An individual changes his behaviors in order to conform,
Internalization
An individual changes his behaviors in order to become what he feels is right
Social Categorization
We categorize objects in order to understand and identify them. Same with people
Social Identification
We adopt the identity of the group that we have categorized ourselves into.
Social Comparison
We tend to compare our group with others
In-Group
individuals who are perceived to be a part of the group
Out-Group
individuals who aren’t perceived as being part of the group
