what kind of anemia is Ferrous sulfate used to treat
iron deficiency anemias (it is just an iron supplement)
What are adverse effects of ferrous sulfate
-GI upset/ constipation
-Can stain teeth brown if taken in liquid form
-can darken stool
What are contraindications of ferrous sulfate
-Hemochromatosis
(elevated levels of iron in the tissues that if you take with a supplement can increase iron levels to toxic concentrations)
-Any GI disorders ie PUD UC (since it’s already so hard on the GI)
What are considerations for ferrous sulfate
-Give on empty stomach if possible
-Rinse mouth to prevent staining of teeth
What is some patient education for someone taking ferrous sulfate
-consume with citrus fruits or tomato juice (helps with absorption)
-Do not take capsules within 1 hour of bed time
-report constipation or diarrhea
-Green or black stools are a harmless side effect
what food should be avoided while taking ferrous sulfate
Milk
eggs
antacids
caffeine
What is folate anemia
when a person lacks Vit B9/folate which is an essential component of RBC
What is pernicious anemia
when someone does not absorb vit b12 properly which results in the production of megaloblastic RBC
What drug is used to treat pernicious anemia
Cyanocobalamin (which is purified form of Vit B12)
What are adverse effects of Cyanocobalamin
-sodium retention
-hypokalemia
