Chapter 29 Hyperlipidemics Flashcards
What is the last name for statins
“-statin”
what is the prototype statin
Atorvastatin
What is the indication for statins
first line therapy for people with high cholesterol
What are contraindications for statins
-liver disease (statins mainly work on the liver)
-drrinking grapefruit juice
-myopathies (because your liver produces enzymes that help your muscles sustain themselves)
What are considerations for statins
-Monitor liver (Very hard on liver)
-If the PT is also taking dig have to monitor levels closely since statins increase dig levels
what is the prototype bile acid sequestrant
Cholestyramine
what is the mechanism of action for bile acid sequestrants
Bind to bile (which contain cholesterol) acid to form an insoluble compound that can be excreted by the liver and inhibits LDL receptors in the liver
What are considerations for Bile acid sequestrants
-Increase fluid intake
-Supplements of vit A, D and folic
what does fibric acid do
lowers triglyceride levels but has little effect on LDL levels
what is the prototype Fibric acid
Gemfibrozil
What are adverse effects of gemfibrozil
-multiple GI side effects
-Blood disorders (anemia, bleeding, increased WBC)
what are contraindications of Gemfibrozil
-Gall bladder disease
-liver disease
-Renal disease
What are drug interactions for Gemfibrozil
-puts patient at increased risk for myopathies (since they are prescribed with statins a lot can be an issue)
-Anticoagulants (since it already puts the PT at risk for increased bleeding)
-enhances antihyperglycemic drugs
