Chapter 20 PSYCHIATRIC DRUG/BIPOLAR DISORDER Flashcards
What is the drug of choice for bipolar disorder
Lithium carbonate
What is the prototype mood stabilizer
Lithium carbonate
What are the drug interactions for Lithium carbonate
-Diuretics (since lithium is a salt so if you dehydrate the PT they become very hypertonic)
-NSAIDS (Can increase lithium levels)
-Antithyroid meds (because lithium already inhibits the thyroid so it has an additive effect)
what are considerations for lithium carbonate
*these are all pretty much to do with the fact that lithium is a salt
-Monitor kidney function/heart function
-Monitor electrolyte levels
-Monitor for any signs of fluid overload or dehydration ie skin turgor edema
what is the etiology of schizophrenia
there is too much dopamine in people with schizophrenia
what are the three antipsychotics used with prototype drug names
-first generations/Non phenothiazines (Haloperidol)
-second generations (risperidone)
-second generation atypical
What is the prototype second generation antipsychotics
Risperidone
What are three other second generation antipsychotics
*“-apine”
-Quetiapine
-Olanzapine
-clozapine
what is an adverse effect that only Second generation antipsychotics produce
orthostatic hypotension
what are considerations for second generation antipsychotics
avoid alcohol (causes additive CNS depression)
what considerations do you have to consider only for second generation atypical antipsychotics
watch labs for liver function
what is the prototype first generation antipsychotic/non phenothiazine
Haloperidol
What are the adverse effects that only haloperidol produces
Anticholinergic symptoms (and watch for all the symptoms that come along with that ie blurred vision dry mouth)
What adverse effects do you need to watch out for with ALL antipsychotics
EPS
NMS
what are some symptoms of EPS
-Akathisia: inability to remain still
-Tardive Dyskinesia: involuntary and abnormal movements
-Parkinsonism
-Acute dystonia
