Chapter 35 Vocab Flashcards
Quadrat
Sample population in several small areas
Indirect counting
Count nests, burrows, or tracks rather than actual organisms
Mark recapture
Mark a few individuals. Recapture to figure out population size. Only give estimates
Limiting factors
Conditions that can restrict a population’s growth
Exponential growth
Population multiplies by constant factor at constant intervals
Carrying capacity
Maximum number of organisms in population that can be maintained by environment
Density dependent factor
A factor which affects a population more as it’s density increases
Population growth cycles
Boom and bust cycle (rise and fall pop)
Immigration
Incoming organisms to population
Emigration
Leaving organisms from pop
Age structure
Distribution of different age groups in a population
Interspecific competition
Species compete for same types of limited resources
Competitive exclusion
One of two competing species with equal needs out competes the other to survive
Niches
Habitat food sources, time when most active, other behaviors
Predation
One organism eats another
Mimiery
Organism mimics another more dangerous organism to discourage predators
Symbiotic relationships
Close interaction of two species. One lives in/on the other
Parasitism
One organism obtains resources st expense of the other, one benefits other is harmed
Mutualism
Both organisms benefit
Commensalism
One organism helped. The other neither helped nor harmed
Population density
Number of individuals of a species in the same area, compare populations in different locations
