Heart
A multi-chambered, muscular organ
Blood
A type of connective tissue that is made of cells and liquid
Pericardium
A sac that encloses the heart
Atria
2 upper chambers of heart that receive blood that is returning to the heart
Ventricles
2 lower chambers that pump blood out of the heart to the body
Aorta
The artery that supplies oxygenated blood to the rest of the body
Blood vessels
Pipeline through body
Capillaries
Smallest blood vessels that carry blood between an artery and vein, allows exchanges of substances. Distributes oxygen and nutrients out of blood and waste products into blood
Arteries
Thick blood vessels, carries blood AWAY from heart to capillaries. Contains pressure so blood only flows one wag towards them
Veins
Blood vessels that RETURN blood to the heart, also carries CO2 away from tissues to the lungs to be expelled
Red Blood Cells
Cells that transport oxygen within the circulatory system, contains hemoglobin
Hemoglobin
A protein that temporarily stores oxygen for delivery to cells (velcro)
Hormones
Chemicals that travel through the bloodstream and affect the activities of other cells, helps cells in different parts of the body
