A characteristic or quality of that texile e.g fireproof
What are desirably properties?
Properties that are the most important for a paticular use.
What are the functions of soft furnishings?
-to make a room look attractive -make a house more comfortable -allow us to express our taste and style
Choosing soft furnishings
-consider the function of the item e.g cushions should be comfortable (no matter how pretty an item is, it’s useless unless it serves a purpose -soft furnishings should look attractive and match the room they’re in -should be easy to clean -should be durable -consider the price
Functions of a curtain
-keeps out light -keep out sound -keep in heat -reduce draughts -give privacy -make a room look attractive

-hang well -be resistant to fading -be closely woven to keep out light -be washable or dry cleanable -be pre/shrunk -be fire resistant

-wool is used because it is warm and resilent -nylon and acrylic are used because they are hardwearing -warm, hardwearing carpets are made by mixing 80% wool and 20% nylon
What are desirable properties in upholstery?
-should be hardwearing -easy to clean -stain resistant -outer fabric should be closely woven -it should comply with fire safety regulations; must contain combustion-modified high-resilience foam

-heavy cotton -linen -wool -velvet -leather -Dralon
What are the uses of textiles in homes?
-soft furnishings; items other than furniture used to decorate room e.g rugs, cushions, lampshades -carpets -upholstry;the covering fabric and filling in sofas, armchair etc. -bed linen -table linen and towels
What are the desirable properties of sheets and pillowcases?
Should be: -absorbent -washable -smooth -crease resistant
What are the desirable properties of duvets and blankets?
-easy to clean -lightweight -warm
What is tog rating?
Tog rating is the warmth of a duvet. The least warm is 4.5 and the higest is 15
What textiles are used in sheets, pillow cases and duvet covers?
-Cotton because it is absorbent, comfortable and washable. -Blends of cotton and polyester are comfortable, crease resistant and easy to wash and dry. -Flannelette is soft, warm and popular for childrens bed linen
What fillings are used in duvet?
Either down feathers or polyester wadding
What textiles are used in blankets?
Wool and nylon blends are warm and hardwearing. Acrylic is cheaper than wool and easy to wash but is not as warm.
