What is a family?
A family is a group of people related by blood, marriage or adoption
What are the 4 types of family?
- nuclear family
- extended family
- blended family
- one-parent family
what is a nuclear family?
Parents and their children living in the same house
What is extended family?
Parents and children together with other relations such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins
What is a blended family?
Created when two families are combined due to a second relationship
What are the functions of the family?
- physical needs
- emotional needs
- economic needs
What are the influences on family life?
- Cultural factors
- social factors
- economic factors
What are children’s rights?
The right to:
- love and understanding
- be cared for and to receive food
- receive education
- be protected by cruelty, neglect and abuse
What are children’s responsibilities?
- respect their parents
- take care of personal space
- do homwork and chores
- interact and play with siblings
What is a role?
A role is the way we are expected to behave
What can lead to role confusion for a teenager?
Teenagers begin to take on the responsibilities of an adult but they may not be given the freedoms they want
What is a gender/sex role?
Gender/sex role means the way one in expected to act because of their gender
What happens when gender roles are enforced?
- both boys and girls develop a limited role
- boys can have difficulty expressing their emotions and girls can have no confidence when it comes to showing their intelligence or their talents
- the two genders can have greater difficulty developing relationships together
What is a stereotype?
A stereotype is a fixed image of how people should behave
What is gender equality?
The idea that males and females should have equal rights, equal responsibilities and opportunities
What is gender equity?
Equal treatment for males and females
How should you handle conflict?
- consider the rights and responsibilities of both parents and teenagers
- listen to how the other person sees the problem
- consider possible solutions
- choose a solution that meets each person’s needs,a compromise
