Chapter 32 exercise and activity needs Flashcards
Abduction
Moving a body part away from the midline
Adduction
Moving a body part toward mid-line
Ambulation
act of walking
Atrophy
decrease in size or wasting away of tissue
Bed rest
restricting a person to bed and limiting activity for health reasons
Contracture
decreased motion and stiffness of a joint caused by shortening of a muscle
Deconditioning
loss of muscle strength from inactivity
Dorsiflexion
bending the toes and foot up at the ankle
Extension
straightening a body part
External rotation
turning joint outward
Flexion
bending body part
Footdrop
foot falls down at the ankle, permanent plantar flexion
Hyperextension
excessive straightening of a body part
Immobility
inability to move
Internal rotation
turning joint inward
Mobility
persons ability to move
Opposition
touching an opposite finger with thumb
Orthotic
device used to support a muscle, promote a certain motion, correct a deformity
Plantar flexion
bending the foot down at ankle
Postural hypotension
Abnormally low blood pressure when the person suddenly stands up
Pronation
turning the joint downward
ROM
movement of a joint to the extent possible without pain
Rotation
turning the joint
Supination
turning the joint upward
Active ROM exercises
are done by the person alone
Passive ROM exercises
Someone moves the joints through their ROM
Active assistive ROM exercises
the person does the exercises with some help
Foot board
prevents foot drop/plantar flexion
Bed cradle
keeps the weight of top linens off the feet and toes
Trochanter roll
prevents the hips and legs from turning outward, external rotation
tucked alongside the body
Hip abduction wedge
keeps the hips abducted
between persons legs
Hand roll / hand grip
prevents contractures of the thumb and fingers
Finger cushion
prevents contractures of the thumb and fingers. fingers are separated
Splint
keeps elbows wrist thumbs fingers ankles knees in normal position
Brace
supports weak body part
Ankle foot orthosis
provides support and alignment to the ankle and foot after a stroke
