Catheter
A tube used to drain or inject fluid through a body opening
Catheterization
The process of inserting a catheter
Condom catheter
A soft sheath that slides over the penis and is used to drain urine
Not inserted into the bladder
Indwelling catheter
A catheter left in the bladder so urine drains constantly into a drainage bag, retention or foley catheter
Straight catheter
A catheter that drains the bladder and then is removed
Purposes for catheters
- to keep the bladder empty
- to promote comfort
- to protect wounds and pressure injuries from contact with urine
- for hourly urine output measurements
- to collect sterile urine specimen
- to measure the amount of urine in the bladder after the person voids (residual urine)

What are the 2 type of urine drainage bag
- Standard drainage bag: holds 2000 mL of urine
- Leg bags: attach to the thigh or calf with elastic bands or velcro. holds less than 1000 mL of urine
Self-adhesive catheters
Have adhesive inside the catheter. the adhesive secures the catheter to the penis
Non-adhesive catheters
Require an adhesive strip or other securing method provided by the manufacturer.
DO NOT apply it completely around the penis in a circle.
