Chapter 3 Flashcards
Is it nature vs nurture or nature and nurture?
Nature and nurture
Gene-by-environment interaction is
when your genetic make up will only occur under specific environmental factors and therefore, if one is not in certain conditions there’s a chance that physical and behavioural traits may not express themselves
Passive Gene-by-environment is
when parents have strong traits for a certain thing that have been genetically passed down to their child, they will create an environment for their child to excel at that specific trait
Evocative interactions is
evoking a treatment for people in ones surroundings with the attention from coaches and parents will improve a lot more then an individual who doesn’t get the support
Active interactions is when
a child seeks an environment they desire to excel in
Epigenetics is the study of
the biological mechanisms that help determine if a gene will be expressed or not. can be effected by environment
When and how does a fetus determine if its going to be a male or female
at the 6th week of conception the SRY gene will either initiate the onset of female or male genitals and by the 12th week it will develop into a dick or a vagina
Presence of what leads to male and lack of leads to female?
Androgens
Male and females have relatively same levels of what until puberty
Testosterone
What is Complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS)
when the cells of the body don’t respond to the unfluence of androgens causing males to develop female traits
how does one determine the sex of a fetus
a) During the 3-7 month using a sonogram
b) Drawing blood at 9 weeks after conception
c) Waiting till birth
Can socialization / parental influence change ones belief if they are male or female
In most cases no
Do male or female have bigger brains on average?
Male by 11%
Do male or female have more dense/larger frontal cortexes?
Females
Which gender has a larger/denser left hippocampus?
Males
Neuroplasticity is the
ability for the brain to adapt and reorganize neuropathways in response to environmental factors
Can social factors alter hormones?
Yes
According to the parental investment theory of evolutionary psychology….
Whichever mate puts more time and effort into reproduction and parenting is normally the one who is more selective
While looking for a mate men prefer
Attractive women with good genes that are typically younger
According to the biosocial constructionist theory the integration of past biological factors with present social and cultural factors explain what
Sex similarities and differences
According to the biosocial constructionist theory society is able to work more efficiently if
men do demanding physical work and women are closer to home to take care of the kids
Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH)
where the body over produces androgens.
-girls with this are genetically female at birth but have more masculine genitalia so they undergo feminization surgery.
